A game that could have an impact on both the AFC and NFC playoff hunt will
take place in Charlotte, North Carolina when the New York Jets
head south to take on the Carolina Panthers. The Jets have been the talk
of the NFL for about three or four years now, not always for good reason,
while the Carolina Panthers have gone completely under the radar this season.
Carolina comes into this contest with still a shot to win the NFC South,
however it wont be easy, but the chance is still there. The Jets on the
other hand are just praying to make the playoffs but not only do they need
to win some games, they will need help from the rest of the AFC as well.
The Panthers come in as 11 point favorites over the Jets. These games are
tough. This is not a must win for the Panthers, but it is a game they should
win with ease. New York on the other hand is getting dangerously close to
that “must win” zone. That is what makes me think that this game could end
up being much more competitive that most think.

The Carolina Panthers are a good team…a really good team. I am still convinced, that even though they lost pretty big to the Saints this past Sunday, that they are still a true NFC title contender. The Panthers have the NFL’s number one rushing defense along with the fifth best passing defense. Not only go they play great defense, but the Panthers score pretty well too. They rank 9th in the NFL in rushing and have been putting up over 24 points a game (until the New Orleans loss). Cam Newton has matured much more than I thought he would. He is becoming a true leader, and not only has he led the Panthers from an attitude standpoint, he is becoming on the NFL’s best passers as well. Carolina is only a few playmakers away from being a Super Bowl contender. Even without those needed playmakers, their defense can carry them a long ways. The key to this game for Carolina is to just control the tempo. The Jets offense is nothing to fear, especially when you have the defense Carolina has. The Panthers can easily get their 10th win of the season, if they just play their game and play clean offense. Not turning the ball over, and winning the field position battle can lift Carolina to an easy win.

Now, how do the underdog Jets find a way to win this game? It will not be easy. Is it possible? Absolutely, but to go on the road and take down the Panthers will not be easy. But remember, we just need them to cover the 11 point spread. The Jets have a pretty decent defense ranking 2nd against the run. If the defensive line can stop the run game, and also pressure Cam, there is a chance of turnovers that can make this game end up much closer than the experts and gamblers think. Double digit NFL spreads are usually tough to bet. In many cases, the road dog finds a way to cover..but are the Jets ready to hang with one of the NFC’s best teams?

Bob’s Pick to Cover the Point Spread: Double digit NFL spread….man these are fun games to try and predict aren’t they? I agree, they suck!! But it must be done. Let’s take a second to look at some numbers in this matchup. First and foremost, both teams have been fairly even against the spread this season. The Jets are 7-6 ATS, while the Panthers are 8-5. From a straight football standpoint, the Panthers have a huge advantage being at home. Carolina is 5-1 in front of the hometown fans in Charlotte, while the Jets only have one win on the road all season (a last second field goal win over the Atlanta Falcons). Based on just those numbers, it appears that Carolina is the pick, but something makes me wonder about that. I do not like taking double digit home faves…I just don’t. All the numbers say Panthers, 62% of the public has put their money on Carolina, and on paper, the Panthers are without a doubt the better team. I think all of these factors have caused this line to be somewhat inflated. I am going total opposite here. I think the Panthers win this game, but they got to work for it. Panthers win this thing 20-14. PICK THE JETS +11
